Merino Wool vs Polyester Shorts: Which Should You Actually Buy?

For everyday wear in a warm climate, merino is the better buy on comfort, odour, how it feels against skin and what happens to the garment once you are done with it. Polyester holds two narrow advantages: it dries faster once fully soaked, and it survives more abrasion.
Merino pulls moisture into the fibre and releases it as vapour, which is why it still feels dry when polyester feels clammy, and why you can wear it several days before it needs a wash. Polyester repels water but attracts skin oils, so sweat and oil sit in the gaps between fibres and feed the bacteria that cause odour. For shorts that move between a cafe, a walk, the water and dinner, merino is the answer. Polyester earns its place in a couple of specific sports, and not much beyond them.
The moisture difference is built into the fibre
Wool is hygroscopic. It absorbs water vapour into the core of the fibre rather than sitting on the surface of it. The International Wool Textile Organisation puts wool's commercial regain at 18.25%, and wool can take on up to around 35% of its own weight in moisture before it starts to feel wet to the touch.
Polyester's moisture regain is 0.4%.
That number explains most of what people notice when they switch. Polyester does not absorb sweat, it moves it, which works while air is flowing over you and stops the moment you sit still. Merino keeps buffering, taking moisture in when you are working and giving it back as you cool down. Across a normal day, that is the difference between comfortable and clammy.
The trade off sits at the extreme. Once merino is properly soaked, in a river or a downpour, it holds more water and takes longer to dry. If your shorts spend their life fully saturated, that matters. For most people it never comes up.
Odour is where the gap is embarrassing
Sweat is close to odourless when it leaves your body. The smell comes from bacteria breaking it down, and the fabric decides how well those bacteria live.
A Ghent University study collected shirts from 26 people after an hour of spin class, half polyester and half cotton, then had a trained odour panel rate them. The polyester shirts scored significantly worse, and the microbiology showed why: polyester was rich in Micrococcus, a genus particularly good at converting sweat into smell. Wool's scaled, irregular surface is a poor place for bacteria to colonise, and it locks odour molecules inside the fibre until the garment dries out. A pair of merino shorts airs overnight and is ready again. A polyester pair goes in the wash after one hot day.
What is sitting against your skin all day
The same property that makes polyester smell is the property that keeps moisture and skin oils pressed against your body rather than moving them away from it. For a garment you wear for eight hours in Australian heat, that is worth thinking about on its own terms, separately from the odour.
Then there is what gets added to the fibre. Synthetic performance fabrics routinely carry water repellent and anti-odour finishes, and PFAS treatments have shown up across the activewear category. We went through what is actually on those garments in is your activewear toxic.
Merino needs none of it. The odour resistance, the moisture handling and the temperature regulation are properties of the fibre, not a coating applied to it, and a coating is a thing that washes off over time.
Abrasion is the one place polyester leads outright
Polyester has higher tensile strength and better abrasion resistance than wool, and it holds its stretch longer. In a lab test measuring how many rubs a fabric survives, polyester wins.
That test is not how shorts usually fail, though. Most garments are retired because they look tired, sag out of shape or smell permanently, and merino is better than polyester on all three. Wool fibre has natural crimp, so it recovers its shape instead of bagging out, and a well made merino garment holds its cut for years. What it will not tolerate is repeated hard friction in one spot. Merino pills where it rubs, particularly under a pack strap, and a loose knit wears through faster than a tight woven construction.
One thing people never think about until it matters: polyester melts. It softens and drips between 252 and 292°C, and molten synthetic sticks to skin. Wool does not melt. Its limiting oxygen index sits around 25 to 26 against polyester's 20 to 21, so wool cannot sustain a flame in ordinary air and self extinguishes. What happens after you throw them out
AgResearch, funded by Australian Wool Innovation, ran comparable lightweight base layer fabrics through controlled aerobic composting: two merino types, viscose rayon, polyester, nylon and polypropylene. Both wools biodegraded. So did the viscose. The three synthetics did not biodegrade at all.
Before that point, polyester sheds. Domestic laundry studies have measured between 700 and 4,000 fibres released per gram of fabric in a single wash. A report published in August 2026 by Earth Action found that manufacturing alone, before a garment is ever worn, generates an estimated 92,000 tonnes of microfibre loss a year, roughly 670 milligrams per kilogram of textile produced, with about 63% still reaching the environment after wastewater treatment.
Regulators have started moving. France has required shedding warning labels on garments over 50% synthetic since January 2025 for brands turning over more than 10 million euros. From September 2026 the EU's Empowering Consumers Directive makes unsubstantiated environmental claims illegal, and by mid 2028 every textile sold into the EU will need a Digital Product Passport carrying its shedding data. The same report puts recycled polyester shedding at the same rate as virgin or up to 55% higher by particle count, which is awkward for anyone whose sustainability story is built on bottles. Where we would not push merino
We make merino shorts and we still would not put someone in them for everything:
- High abrasion sport. Climbing and mountain biking, where fabric grinds against rock or a saddle.
- Wool sensitivity. Some people find any wool uncomfortable regardless of micron. Fine merino is far less prickly than coarse wool, but it is not zero for everyone.
Merino also asks more in care. Cold wash, wool cycle, no fabric softener, dry flat. Not difficult, but it is not "throw it in on hot and forget about it" either.
FAQs
Do merino wool shorts dry faster than polyester?
In normal wear, merino feels dry for longer, because it absorbs moisture into the fibre before the surface feels wet. Fully soaked, after a swim or heavy rain, polyester is dry first. Which one matters depends on whether your shorts spend more time sweaty or more time submerged.
Are merino shorts durable enough for everyday wear?
Yes, for walking, travel, work and general wear. Merino has lower abrasion resistance than polyester, so it will pill under a pack strap or wear at friction points sooner, but it holds its shape better and does not develop permanent odour, which is what actually retires most shorts. Construction matters more than the fibre here: a tightly woven merino short handles daily wear far better than a loose knit one.
How many times can you wear merino shorts before washing?
Three to four wears is normal for everyday use, and multiple days is normal on the trail. Air them overnight between wears. This is a real difference from polyester, which typically needs washing after every sweaty wear. More detail is in our guide to merino wool for hiking.
Is merino wool actually better for the environment than recycled polyester?
On end of life, yes. Controlled composting trials by AgResearch showed wool biodegraded while polyester, nylon and polypropylene did not degrade at all. Recycled polyester does divert bottles from landfill, but it sheds microfibres at the same rate as virgin polyester or higher, and it still does not break down.
