Cotton is the default for hot weather. It's light, breathable and natural. But if you've ever sweated through a cotton shirt and spent the rest of the day wearing a damp, clingy mess, you know it has a real problem in the heat.
Merino wool, which most people assume is strictly for winter, actually handles high temperatures better than cotton in a lot of situations. Here's how they compare and when each one makes sense.
The cotton problem in heat
Cotton is a hydrophilic fibre: it absorbs moisture readily. That sounds like a feature. In practice, once cotton saturates with sweat, it holds onto it. The moisture stays in the fabric against your skin, which makes you feel wet, heavy and chafed. It also takes a long time to dry, which compounds the problem.
In dry heat, cotton works reasonably well because sweat evaporates before it saturates the fabric. In humid heat, which is most of Australia in summer, it's a poor performer. The moisture has nowhere to go.
How merino handles heat differently
Merino wool is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture into the core of the fibre rather than letting it pool on the surface. Then it releases it as vapour. The result is that moisture is transported away from your skin before you feel wet. You stay drier.
The fibre's natural crimp and structure also traps air, which buffers your body against temperature swings in both directions. It's the same mechanism that makes merino work in the snow and in the desert: it's regulating, not just insulating.

Where cotton still wins
Cotton is cheaper, more widely available and easier to care for. For casual everyday wear in dry or mild conditions, a t-shirt on a cool day, jeans in spring, it's perfectly good. Organic cotton in particular is a solid natural-fibre choice and a significant improvement over synthetic alternatives.
Cotton also has a lower entry price point. If you're buying basics on a budget and live somewhere dry, cotton makes sense.
Where merino wins
Anywhere the conditions are demanding: active wear, travel, hot and humid climates, multi-day adventures where you can't wash daily. Merino's performance advantage over cotton becomes most obvious when you're sweating, moving and can't afford to feel uncomfortable.
